Since the recent Boardroom Show there has been a lot of buzz about this years Icons of Foam guest of honor Bob Mctavish, and rightly so. His contributions to surfing are beyond extensive.
I finished work on this San Juan by McTavish the day before the show. I showed it to Bob and he dated it to 1970 shortly before he left San Juan and headed out on his own. He felt the rails and said that Mike Hynsons down rail design was a big influence at the time. It was cool to hear him talk about the board and the time frame in which it was created and I was stoked to have him sign it.
San Juan Surfboards was started in Byron Bay in 1967 by Ken Adler. Over the years they employed some legendary shapers including Wayne Lynch, Russell Hughes, Neal Purchase and Nat Young. In 1968 Bob McTavish became one of the in-house shapers.
This board was pretty rough when I got it. There were no major delam areas so I made the needed repairs and kept the original glass allowing McTavishs clean shape to stay intact. The logos were in good condition but the board was dark and ugly so a major color face lift was needed. Pin lines and a gloss and polish finished off the transformation.
Its an important board from a legendary surfer/shaper built in one of Australias premier board factories. A worthy addition to any collection.
Interesting back story on this one. The person I got it from is a surfer and collector in Tijuana. One evening he was at the beach just before dark and saw two guys wearing backpacks and carrying boards heading toward the water. The boards were painted dark but he could tell by the shape that one board was a 1970s single fin. He approached them and asked what they were going to do with the boards once they reached the U.S. They said they were going to drop them and run. He told them he had a board in his truck that would be much easier to paddle and would trade it for the small board. Once he got it home and sanded off the paint the San Juan logo appeared.
