Rafting is how it all started at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. In 1972 Payson Kennedy, Aurelia Kennedy, and Horace Holden started a small rafting company on the Nantahala River in western North Carolina. The NOC has since grown and now operates on six rivers along with three retail locations and two restaurants.
